Friends of Los Feliz Library (FoLFL) was formed in 1993 as a California non-profit. FoLFL is an independent voice advocating for the Los Feliz Branch Library and services provided to its community.
Through memberships, donations, and fundraising, FoLFL provides supplemental funding for necessities to help support and maintain the Los Feliz Branch Library as a relevant and vibrant cornerstone of the community.
Los Feliz Branch Library is proud to be one of 73 libraries in the Los Angeles Public Library system.
With major support from FoLFL, the Los Feliz Branch continues to meet the needs of local library-goers – providing free and equitable access to information and knowledge through various programming, education, technology, and printed page.
Friends of Los Feliz Library (FoLFL) is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization which was created to procure, manage and enhance services at the Los Feliz Public Library – funding supplies, various programs, education, technology and a variety
of cultural events.
Currently, the board consists of twelve community members from a variety of backgrounds who share a love of libraries This board is autonomous from the public library system.
The board meets monthly with the Senior Librarian to discuss library and funding needs within the library.
Like Friends groups across the Los Angeles Public Library system, FoLFL works hard to ensure
this library maintains its standard of access and information to our community by...
Purchasing supplies for a variety
of age-appropriate reading and art programs for toddlers, teens,
and in-betweens.
Furnishing our librarians with the financial support necessary to keep book shelves well-stocked with the latest contemporary reading materials.
Organizing used book sales on the last Saturday of the Month that draw hundreds of book lovers from across the community to the library.
Ensuring librarians get support in order to stay current in technology.
Sponsoring the Architecture and Beyond Lecture Series and other programs brings authors on-site for an entertaining evening. Architecture & Beyond has been one of Los Feliz Branch Library’s most enduring programs where the community is privileged to hear from architects and those who write about architects (among others).
Hosting special events like the
Los Feliz Village Holiday Tree Lighting and Los Feliz Improvement Association's Photo Day.
The Los Feliz Library has a vast collection of over 56,000 books, dvds, cds and special items. Additionally, there’s the Helen Bernstein Meeting Room named
in honor of the former member of the Board of Library Commissioners.
There are Virtual Library workstations funded by the Walt Disney Company Foundation “Adopt-a-Branch” program and regularly scheduled programs for children, teens, adults and families.
The Leonardo DiCaprio Computer Center (pictured above) provides computers
and privacy.
In response to requests from people for “good places to eat” after their library visit, there is a reference menu collection, “A Taste of Los Feliz” and a Los Feliz in Literature collection highlighting local authors and books taking place in Los Feliz and surrounding environs.
01/13
The Los Feliz Branch first opened in 1923 and became part of the Los Angeles Public Library system in 1924. Originally, this branch was located on Vermont Avenue, but in subsequent years it moved many times throughout the community.
In 1950, the branch was moved to a storefront at 1939 1⁄2 Hillhurst Avenue, where its book collection and public usage continued to increase steadily. By 1978, the Los Feliz Branch had expanded into a number of adjacent building spaces, occupying approximately 1,000 square feet.
Eventually, the library department, Friends of the Los Feliz Library, community members, elected officials and the Board of Library Commissioners, realized this branch was in need of a permanent space and began to develop plans for a facility that would serve the needs of the community.
In 1994, the Northridge earthquake caused the temporary branch to close at the 1939 1/2 Hillhurst location, and a year later, this branch was relocated to the vacant Yellow Ribbon Market space at 1801 Hillhurst Avenue.
Architect Barton Phelps was commissioned to design the current 10,500 square foot building at 1874 Hillhurst Ave. at the corner of Hillhurst and Franklin Aves. with funding from the Library Bond Proposition #1, which had been passed by voters in 1989.
Rich, warm redwood walls, large bright windows and a beautiful Cultural Affairs-funded public artwork “Conjunction of 500 Wishes” by local artist, Joyce Dallal complete the vision of Barton Phelps. (a portion of this mural can be seen on our homepage) The new Los Feliz Branch Library opened to the public on April 8, 1999 amid much fanfare. The Junior Girl Scout Troop #864 and Thomas Starr King Middle School Drill Team led then-Mayor Richard Riordan, Councilman John Ferraro and City Librarian Susan Kent into the new building.
The John Marshall Brass Quintet performed lively fanfare, the ribbon was cut and the Los Feliz community was welcomed in to admire their new library.
